Miami, Florida

A breather for the whole family, in Spanish and at your pace

Respite is a therapy practice in Miami for Cuban and Caribbean families. Three therapists who see clients in Spanish and in English; the family decides together who comes to the first conversation.

Therapy

Who comes, and how to begin

Every kind of family starts from a different place. You choose yours.

  • Family therapy

Mothers, fathers, children and grandparents in the same room, or in turns. You decide who comes.

    See family therapy
  • Couples therapy

Two people, 80-minute sessions, in Spanish, English or both.

    See couples therapy
  • Individual therapy

For adults who prefer to talk about what they feel in the language of their home.

Deciding together

At Respite, the family decides together how to begin

Nobody has to agree first to write to us. We talk with whoever takes the first step and, if you like, with the rest of the family before the first session.

  • One person writes

By WhatsApp, by phone or through the form. You tell us who lives at home and who you would like at the table.

  • Everyone has a say, in their own way

Whoever prefers not to come can talk by phone or wait. Your therapist helps you decide who attends each session.

  • Nobody is made to come

Adults decide for themselves. With minors, we talk first with a parent or guardian.

At the office or by video. At the end, everyone decides whether to continue.

How fees work

The answers to what almost everyone asks before the first session.

  • Insurance we work with

Respite takes some commercial PPO plans; we do not take Medicare or Medicaid. If your plan is not one of them, you can pay yourself and ask for a receipt for reimbursement. If you are looking for someone who bills your plan, we are glad to give you colleagues' names.

    • Some commercial PPO plans

    • No Medicare or Medicaid

  • If you pay yourself

Payment is taken at the end of each session, by card, including HSA and FSA cards. There is no contract and nothing to pay in advance. The fee depends on the kind of session and its length: 60 minutes for the first, 50 for an individual session and 80 for a couple or family session. We give it to you in writing before you start. A limited number of reduced-fee spots are open; ask how to request one. We ask for 24 hours' notice to change an appointment.

  • Receipts for reimbursement

Each month we give you an itemized receipt (a superbill) with the dates and the kind of session, to send to your plan, which may reimburse part of out-of-network care. It carries a diagnosis code that your insurer can see. Your plan decides whether it reimburses anything; ask it before you start.

  • An estimate in advance

If you pay without insurance, you have the right to receive a Good Faith Estimate in writing before care starts. We give you one before the first session. If your final bill is $400 or more above the estimate, you can dispute it. The estimate is not a contract.

  • Checking your benefits

Before the first session we check your mental health benefits with your plan and tell you in writing what it covers and what you would pay. You give us your plan details by phone, not through this site.

Questions

What almost everyone asks

Do you take my insurance?

We take some commercial PPO plans; we do not take Medicare or Medicaid. If your plan is not one of them, you can pay yourself and we give you an itemized receipt in case your plan reimburses. Before the first session we check your benefits.

What is a Good Faith Estimate?

If you pay without insurance, you have the right to receive a Good Faith Estimate in writing before care starts. We give you one before the first session. If your final bill is $400 or more above the estimate, you can dispute it. The estimate is not a contract.

Who has to come to the first session?

Whoever you like. One person can come, a couple or several generations. If someone in the family prefers not to come, you can start without them and decide later. The Deciding together page explains how we do it.

What happens in the first session?

It lasts 60 minutes. Your therapist explains how they work, the limits of confidentiality and the possible risks and benefits of therapy, and listens. At the end, the two of you decide whether to continue.

Are you licensed where I live?

Our licenses are from Florida. By video we see people who are in Florida during the session. If you are in another state, we help you find someone licensed there.

What do I do in a crisis?

Call or text 988, any time; for Spanish, press 2. In an emergency, call 911. This site and our messages are not monitored around the clock.
